"The role of institutions for forest resource and livelihood management in East African forest landscapes"

Objectives

The objective of the project is to strengthen research capacities to better understand the role of institutions and institutional change for sustainable natural resource management and livelihoods in East African forest landscapes, specifically Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

The goal will be achieved by the following:

  1. Research
  2. Each country will have its own research sites and case studies, however, the centre for training, capacity building and knowledge exchange will be in Ethiopia as it is new to the research network. Research will be carried out on the following topics:
    • participatory forest landscape assessment
    • assessment of household data and livelihood strategies
    • assessment and analysis of institutions affecting resource management and livelihoods.

  3. Training and capacity building
  4. Two 6-week intensive training courses will be held at Addis Ababa University, including training in field research methods in the vicinity of Addis. Training and capacity building activities will include:
    • a training of trainers course at Addis University
    • a six-weeks intensive training course on theory and methodology for MSc and PhD students.
    • exchange of information and research activities through an online platform

  5. Networking activities
    • learning and exchange visits of all East African partners
    • annual conferences.
